Our inspiration · our guru

Sir M. Visvesvaraya

Bharat Ratna, 1955

Sir M. Visvesvaraya · 1861 – 1962

Sir M. Visvesvaraya grew up in Muddenahalli, a village in Karnataka, and went on to build dams, banks, colleges and industries that still serve the state. He believed that discipline, honesty and hard work, applied patiently, lift whole communities. That is the standard we've set ourselves: a club is only worth belonging to if its members leave with a new partner, a new idea or a friend who opens a door. We keep his portrait on our wall as a reminder that the measure is what we build together, not what we announce.

“Remember, your work may be only to sweep a railway crossing, but it is your duty to keep it so clean that no other crossing in the world is as clean as yours.”— Sir M. Visvesvaraya

What he built

Still standing, still serving

As engineer and as Dewan of Mysore (1912–1918), he built the dams, banks, factories and colleges that Karnataka still depends on.

Krishna Raja Sagara dam

Chief engineer of the KRS dam on the Kaveri, which still waters farms around Mandya and Mysuru and supplies Bengaluru.

Automatic flood gates

His patented gates were used at Khadakvasla and Tigra (Gwalior) as well as at KRS.

Mysore Soap Factory

Started during his time as Dewan; its sandalwood soap is still made in Bengaluru today.

Bhadravati Iron & Steel

The Mysore Iron Works at Bhadravati, one of the first steel plants in South India.

State Bank of Mysore

Founded as the Bank of Mysore to give local businesses their own bank.

Engineering College, Bangalore

Founded in 1917, now University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE).

Mysore Chamber of Commerce

Brought the state’s traders and industrialists together, the same idea behind our Business Forum.

Kannada Sahitya Parishat

He backed the parishat to develop and promote the Kannada language.

What we carry forward

Four lessons

01

Be on time

He was famous for punctuality. Club events start when they say they will.

02

Keep it simple

A vegetarian who neither smoked nor drank, he lived simply and worked hard into his nineties.

03

Build for others

Every project he led was meant to outlast him. We measure ourselves by what members build together.

04

Do it properly

In his words, keep your crossing so clean that no other is as clean as yours.
